(WASHINGTON) Nov. 30, 2009—In the race to unravel the facts and motivations behind the Fort Hood terror attack, ABC News is now the first major media outlet to cite the prescient reporting of the top-selling book, Muslim Mafia: Inside the Secret Underworld that’s Conspiring to Islamize America.
In today’s lead story on “The Blotter by Brian Ross,” ABC reporters Joseph Rhee and Mark Schone quote Paul Sperry, co-author of Muslim Mafia, who retraced how the known al-Qaeda recruiter credited with inspiring Nidal Malik Hasan’s alleged shootings was actually apprehended—then released—by authorities nearly eight years ago.
“Investigators are mad as hell,” ABC News quotes Paul Sperry as saying, “and they have a valid point in asking whether a dozen soldiers would be alive today if they’d been allowed to put the screw to Awlaki when they had the chance.”

That chance came on Oct. 10, 2002, when Anwar al Awlaki—whose website recently praised Hasan¹s alleged actions as, “the only way a Muslim could Islamically justify serving as a soldier in the U.S. Army”—was captured at JFK Airport in New York. But one day earlier his arrest warrant had been rescinded, so he was released from custody.
In Muslim Mafia, which exposes the dangerous Muslim Brotherhood in America and is published by WND Books, Sperry uncovered classified immigration records on Awlaki¹s brief detainment and mysterious release in one of several shocking news scoops found in the book. In fact, some of the subjects Muslim Mafia exposes are suing to have it shut down.
The exclusive and sensitive federal documents concerning Awlaki—which also detail his listing on the terror watch list and involvement in other terrorist investigations—are available for review from the author upon request.
“Considering how many terrorists this al-Qaida operative has radicalized in the U.S., Canada and Britain, his release from US custody is nothing short of a scandal,” Sperry said.
The book chronicles its six-month undercover penetration of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, conducted by the son of Muslim Mafia’s co-author, P. David Gaubatz. Chris Gaubatz posed as a recent Muslim convert and intern, and his investigation revealed CAIR’s litany of terror ties and intents.
A federal judge recently ruled that the Gaubatzes return some of the 12,000 pages of documents that Chris salvaged from CAIR’s shredder–—which provide much of the basis for the book’s conclusions. But two days before Thanksgiving, FBI agents swooped in on the Washington, D.C., law office of the attorneys representing Dave Gaubatz with a warrant for the documents.
A noted member of the attorney team defending the Gaubatzes is Martin Garbus, whose clients list includes Ronald Reagan, Nelson Mandela, Robert Redford, Spike Lee, Al Pacino and Daniel Ellsberg of Pentagon Papers fame.

Muslim Mafia has already made headlines. Its findings prompted outrage by key members of Congress, who called for investigations into CAIR’s actions and associations. The book is packed with pages of recently declassified government documents and evidence from the covert operation, including thousands of e-mails, faxes and internal memos that CAIR never intended for public viewing.
Some of the key smoking-gun revelations detailed in the book include:
